Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child ready for piano lessons?

Almost all children 7 years and older are ready to start lessons.
Younger children, 4-6 may need shorter lessons and will likely use one of the preschool piano series.
Generally, if they can focus for 15 min and follow simple directions, they will do fine!

How long are lessons?

Most lessons are 30 minutes. Very young children may have 15-20 minute lessons. Very advanced students do well with 45-60 mins.

Do we need a piano at home?

Yes. You will need at least an 88 key electric keyboard or piano, preferably with weighted keys so you may play loud and soft. An acoustic piano is preferred however as the weight of the keys will better strengthen fingers and develop playing skills.

What do you specialize in?

I'm a classically trained pianist, which means I'm most knowledgeable on historic and modern European/American fine art music. This means I'm not the teacher for you if you'd like to specialize in jazz or pop improve or world music.
Study in my studio WILL prepare you to be a well-rounded musician and you will practice ear-training and sight-reading and learn music theory (how music is put together) and music history.

What about practice?

Parents giving help, guidance and support at home is central to student success. Children need to be taught how to practice, which I will help with but also need to develop executive functioning skills of when to practice, how long to practice, what to practice, etc.
Since your teacher isn't with you every day, an adult will need to lead children in developing these skills and habits.  It's like brushing teeth, it's not likely to get done unless prompted!
As your child enters teen years, they will not/should not need such supervision and should start to demonstrate these skills on their own.

What are the tuition fees?
